Got Gun?

The court's 5-4 ruling struck down the District of Columbia's ban on handguns and imperiled similar prohibitions in other cities, Chicago and San Francisco among them. Federal gun restrictions, however, were expected to remain largely intact.

Mafia man too fat for jail released to house arrest

ROME (Reuters) - A court in Sicily has ruled that an accused Mafioso can be put under house arrest because he is too fat for any Italian jail.

Salvatore Ferranti, who weighs 210 kg (462 pounds), was allowed to go home after spending six months in four Italian prisons, his lawyer told Reuters, confirming a local newspaper report.

Guards at the first two prisons said they constantly needed to help Ferranti, 36, get dressed and undressed, move about and go to the bathroom.

Guards at other prisons said there was no bed big enough for him, that he could not get through the bathroom door, and that they would be at a loss if he had to be taken to a hospital in an emergency.

Ferranti was accused of being a member of the Mafia clan once headed by Salvatore Lo Piccolo, the "boss of bosses" arrested last November.

Lawyer Raffaele Bonsignore filed a motion with a court in Palermo to release him under house arrest because he suffered from "grave obesity", calling it "a pathology incompatible with prison".

Lost and Found Surprise

The surprise was on the phone I found at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. It had some racy pics of its owner on it, to which I posted my own angry face with "naughty" shaking finger on it. When the owner gets back their phone, I hope they'll be embarrassed knowing someone saw that.
Have you ever found something that was unusual? What happened? Was there a reward?
Email us and let us know. If it's interesting, we may air the story.
Good luck!

We Struck GOLD!!!

On Friday we talked about "one tank trips" to do with friends or family. One that caught us by surprise was, panning for gold. Now of course it appeals to us in many ways...nature, family time, and um....$$$$!
Steve Sekula was good enough to bring this great outing to our attention and invited us to go panning for gold near Lake Anna. Jessica couldn't make it so I took my family to a stream with a dream, and we meet Steve Sekula a.k.a. Master Panner
Steve taught us the tricks of the trade, and then we went to work.
I didn't think we'd find any gold, but have a nice family day and get some exercise. Boy was I wrong - WE STRUCK GOLD! Thanks to Steve and his keen eye, we went home with excitement about our experience! We are hooked! Needless to say we have our next 12 weekends planned out - or should I say panned out.
If you're interested, CLICK HERE to get more information. See some of the pics below.
Thanks again to Steve Sekula!

Way Cool...

We talked about "The Hottest Jobs" this morning ranging from Jessica's Corn Detassler to Lineman, Bus Drivers, Roofers, and being a US Serviceman. The heat is going to only increase and to help cooool you down, we're passing on some great tips;

*Drink lots of cold drinks. Water is the best but cool liquids of any type will help to cool you down.

*Keep still and quiet (this is big for parents with kids). This is not a good time for exercising, sports or running around. Keep these activities for the evening when the air becomes cooler and the sun goes down.

*Go swimming (but not in the Rappahannock). If you can, select a shady body of water.

*Have a cold shower or bath. Even a small amount of water sprayed or splashed on you can help. Or try a face washer dipped in cold water and held against your face and forehead for instant cooling relief. Wet towels if you need to cool all of your body and wrap your legs, torso and arms with them.

*Wet your hair with cold water every half an hour.

*Apply lots of sun protection lotion throughout the day. The protective function of such lotion only lasts for a few hours and less when you are in water. Reapply frequently for best coverage.

*Wear a hat and don't expose too much skin. Long-sleeved shirts made of cotton, hemp and other natural fabrics will help deflect the sun's rays and protect your skin.

*Keep inside or in the shade when the sun is at its height. Don't go outside if you can help it between 11 o' clock and 3 o' clock, as these are the hours during which the sun is at its strongest.

SPECIAL ATTENION

**If you get a headache, drink lots of water and stay in the shade. Lie down if you feel faint.

**Always be attentive to the elderly who can suffer heat exhaustion quickly.

**Keep an eye on your companion animals as well, to make sure that they do not suffer from heat exhaustion or dehydration. Leave water bowls around for them and other animals in your garden or yard.

WARNING

***If you sunbathe, reapply sunscreen cream more often than you think you need to. Water washes the sunscreen lotion off.

***Read the labels of sunscreen cream very carefully. Be informed about the ingredients and make sure they are suitable for your skin.

***Dehydration is a serious condition - stay hydrated!

Suckers...

That's what many people are thinking, who bought the first generation of iPhones.
Why you ask? Because the new generation high-speed iPhone 3G is arriving shortly (on July 11). It's half the price of its predecessor ($199 for an 8GB model with a two-year contract), and it has GPS. Apple hasn't offered any type of compensation for those who still have the dinosaur version that first came out last year.
There are some drawbacks with the new version - it has to be activated IN STORE ONLY, and now comes with a plastic back.
So if you've already bought the first generation...you could always eBay it and get the new 3G, or visit the nearest Apple iPhone store and oogle it through the glass. : (

What the....?

The New York City Opera has commissioned an opera based on "Brokeback Mountain," the Annie Proulx short story that became the basis for the 2005 Oscar-winning movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger.
The critically acclaimed film caused controversy with its unabashed portrayal of a homosexual romance between two ranch hands. It won three Academy Awards.
City Opera tapped Charles Wuorinen to
compose the opera, which is to premiere in spring 2013.

OK, the story worked on film, but as an opera? How are they going to get the horses to sing?

Blood for Gas?

The Arizona Blood Services is trying a new marketing technique to entice people to donate blood - offering free gas; it is being reported by the Arizona Daily Star.

“Blood donations historically decrease when people are traveling, often causing the blood supply to fall below safe levels,” said Debra Deininger, a spokesperson for the Tucson American Red Cross. “We have projected that we will need to see 23,000 people donate blood now through Labor Day in order to maintain an adequate supply through summer.”

On Memorial Day, donors at two Tucson blood centers will receive free barbeque meals and the chance to win a $150 gas card, according to the newspaper.

Be on the lookout for your chance to give!

Fitness Alert: Childhood Obesity is on the Rise

Do you know when to be concerned about your child's weight? Of course, all children gain weight as they grow older. But extra pounds — more than what's needed to support their growth and development — can lead to childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity is serious. It occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height. Childhood obesity is particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start kids on the path to health problems that were once confined to adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

We spoke to Denise Austin about kids and familys making healthy choices. If you missed any of the show or the great tips, you can log onto the Mayo Clinic's Site by CLICKING HERE, and Denise Austin's site and her "Fit Forever" program CLICK HERE.
